Celebrate the harvest season with a fun weekend of tasting unique and wonderful New Hampshire wines, meads, and ciders! In the tradition of many California vineyards, seven wineries in the Lakes Region have pulled together and are planning to open house for two days of touring and tasting for the third annual Barrel Tasting Weekend.
The 2013 Lakes Region Barrel Tasting Weekend will take place on October 5th and 6th, from 11 am to 5 pm. The seven participating wineries this year are: Coffin Cellars, Stone Gate Vineyard, Gilmanton Winery, Sap House Meadery, Haunting Whisper Vineyards, Newfound Lake Vineyards, and Hermit Woods Winery.
After the success of last year’s Barrel Tasting Weekend, when nearly 500 people from throughout New England toured the participating wineries, the organizers are anticipating an even bigger and better event this year. “Even with heavy rain almost the entire weekend last year, we still had an incredible turnout and everyone had a great time,” says Bob Manley of Hermit Woods Winery, the coordinator of the event. “Should the weather cooperate, we would expect an even greater turnout this year.”
At each winery, guests will have the opportunity to taste young wines directly from the oak and stainless steel barrels that are used to ferment and age the varietals. Not only will it be a unique opportunity to taste wine in the early stages of its development, visitors will be able to meet the wine makers, tour the wine making facilities, and learn all about the wine making process. In addition, many of the wineries will be hosting other local vendors during the event, and offering special foods and wine-related items to guests.
Once again, there will be wonderful prizes for those guests who visit the most wineries during the course of the weekend. Guests must visit at least four wineries to be eligible for the raffle drawings. Those who get their wine map stamped by all seven wineries will be entered into the drawing for all available raffle prizes, including two wonderful Grand Prizes. The 1st Grand prize this year is a 3-night stay in the Lake Solitude Suite at Lake House At Ferry Point, valued at $815, and the 2nd Grand prize is a two-night stay at Church Landing at Mill Falls at the Lake, valued at $750. For a complete listing of prizes, please visit the Barrel Tasting Weekend page here. Door prizes and gifts will also be available at all the wineries during the event.
The organizers really want this to be an event everyone can enjoy and participate in. “We want to provide a unique opportunity for everyone to learn about and appreciate wine,” says Bob. “Whether you’re a novice who is just learning about wine or a seasoned wine connoisseur, there will be something here for everyone.”
All seven Lakes Region wineries pride themselves on crafting quality New Hampshire traditional, fruit, and honey wines, many of which have received awards in national and international tastings. Most of the wineries grow their grapes in their own vineyards, and all of them utilize locally grown fruit and honey as much as possible, working closely with local farmers and pickers to find the best possible fruit with which to make their wine. Lakes Region wines are available in the wineries’ tasting rooms and restaurants, as well as at local wine shops and eateries.
